My Time at Fuerza Latina: A Marketing Intern’s Journey

Embarking on my internship at Fuerza Latina felt like opening a new chapter filled with unknown possibilities. As a business administration student with a keen interest in marketing, I was eager to dive into the world of social media and digital marketing. Little did I know, this internship would become one of the most beneficial experiences of my academic and professional journey.

My role as a marketing intern primarily involved creating content for Instagram and Facebook, using Meta Business to manage and optimize our campaigns. One of the key projects I worked on was promoting the Vaughan Latin Festival. This entailed crafting engaging posts to build excitement for the event, highlighting key performances, and ensuring our audience was informed and enthusiastic.

Gina was more than just a supervisor; she was a mentor and a source of inspiration. Her deep understanding of marketing strategies and her creative approach to problem-solving were always inspiring. She encouraged me to think outside the box and gave me the freedom to experiment with different content styles and strategies.

Working alongside an amazing team was another highlight of my internship. Each member brought their unique skills and perspectives, creating a dynamic and collaborative environment. We brainstormed ideas, tackled challenges together, and celebrated our successes as a team. We also had some great laughs during team events. One memorable moment was while recording a podcast; I laughed so hard I started crying. These moments of joy made the work environment even more enjoyable and strengthened our bonds as a team.

Beyond the technical skills and marketing knowledge, my time at Fuerza Latina taught me invaluable lessons about teamwork, resilience, and the power of a positive work culture. Gina often reminded me to apply 100% effort to everything I do in life, a piece of advice that has significantly changed my work habits.

As I look back on my internship, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities and experiences it provided. Fuerza Latina was not just a stepping stone in my career; it was a place where I grew, learned, and formed lasting connections. And for that, I will always be thankful.

Finding Purpose Through Volunteering

Volunteering is not only a great way to give back to our communities, it can also help us grow, find a sense of purpose, and connect with different people. When I think back to my first volunteer position at 15 years old, the experience of helping the people in my community gave me a sense of direction for my future career and life. While I initially volunteered as a necessity to graduate high school and complete my required hours, I coincidentally found my passion, and continued to volunteer long past those required 40 hours.

My volunteer experience provided me with many different skills that improved my self-confidence, and my life overall. While I was very shy to speak to new people beforehand, I was given the mentorship and abilities to be comfortable knocking on doors and making phone calls. I went from being unable to place an order at a restaurant, to being able to easily converse with new community members and spread a message I believed in. These skills are essential for job interviews & most fields of work, and they helped me gain future employment in various fields.

Volunteering also guided me to find my passion for working with marginalized groups and children. When we volunteer, we become part of something bigger than ourselves. We learn about how different people’s experiences can be and grow our compassion for others. This important and meaningful work provides me and many others with a great sense of community, purpose, and achievement for being able to improve the lives of those in need.

These skills have also been helpful in other areas of life. I was able to gain relationships with new friends at my volunteer placement who helped teach me and support my journey, and I became more confident in making new friends in the future. I also made connections with people who ended up employing me in another different field for 3 years. These connections and experiences shaped my future career goals and ambitions. Without volunteering, I wouldn’t have ever explored some of these life-changing opportunities out of fear and lack of experience. Even though my first volunteer experience was almost 10 years ago, I still use these skills, connections, and passions in my life today.

At Fuerza latina, our volunteers are a diverse group of people coming together with a common goal. The bonds formed here often extend beyond our programs, creating a network of support and friendship. For many, volunteering with us is a way to stay connected to their cultural roots. It’s about giving back to the community that has given them so much. Working together on projects, sharing stories, and supporting each other creates a strong sense of belonging and unity.

We offer a variety of ways to get involved. Whether you’re interested in education, community outreach, or advocacy, there’s something for everyone at Fuerza Latina. You might find yourself helping to organize events, assisting with administrative tasks, or directly engaging with community members.

Volunteering with Fuerza Latina Services isn’t just about giving your time; it’s about becoming part of a community and making meaningful connections. We invite you to join us in our mission to empower the Latina community. Whether you can spare a few hours or commit to a longer-term project, your involvement is important and will give you a sense of belonging and passion for community work and the power of volunteering.

Mistakes and experiences

Mistakes and experiences

Mistakes are not failures but stepping stones toward personal and professional development. By reframing them as opportunities to learn, individuals can cultivate resilience. Every mistake offers a chance to acquire new knowledge. Embrace them, reflect on what went wrong, and use that knowledge to grow and improve.

Mistakes can happen at anytime and anywhere. We cannot avoid them because it’s something normal that everyone has in common. In one day people can make up to 10+ mistakes but don’t even notice that they did but if you pay really good attention to everything you do, you can avoid them and do better.

After making a mistake, people tend to feel bad and sad, but that should not be the case. Making a mistake is really common for everyone. After one mistake from doing something you learn and you can make sure it doesn’t happen again. In my opinion there are two types of mistakes people can make such as “Making a big mistake” and “Making a small mistake” a big mistake is bad and something that you did or regretted, and a small mistake is something soft that is easy to recover from.

Mistakes and experiences are the threads that weave our stories. By reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth, and by embracing vulnerability and resilience, we can transform the challenges we face into stepping stones toward a better path for yourself and your life.

The Loss of Childhood

The Loss of Childhood

As an immigrant, you never get the full experience of growing up. From finding new friends, to having a faster developed sense of maturity, an immigrant is never able to feel “normal”. Often viewed by many as the outcast and treated differently than others lies nothing else but a kind, loving kid, waiting for their time to have fun. Unfortunately for many, this time is nothing but imaginary.

A childhood is essential for all. It serves as the building blocks for one's future. The loss of someone's childhood will lead to a loss of a part of their soul. Without this they will not be able to operate such as others do. This can all lead them to a higher risk of experiencing mental health problems in the future. I like to think of this because they were not able to experience enough love and happiness in their early life, which makes them more vulnerable to mental health problems.

However, childhood is not only about friends and having fun. The most important aspect of all is family. Though it is sad to say that many children do not experience or enjoy this aspect, whether it is from immigration problems, where the family is split up, or personal problems. By nature all humans are selfish, especially early on in our lives, this can escalate and lead to a feeling of resentment towards something or someone. Immigrant children experience this selfishness towards moving away from what they have learnt to call and classify “home”. Their lack of understanding automatically leads them to blame their parents for this, and as stated before this feeling can spike to a sense of hatred towards them. A poor relationship with someone so close to you is a primary cause for the development of mental health issues.

Nonetheless, there is always sunshine at the end of the rainbow. While it may seem that immigration only causes bad to people, there is some good. For example, immigration can help develop and refine social skills which serve very useful for the future career-wise. The reason for this being that they might need to serve as translators for their parents and also do not have the privilege of their parents solving their problems for them. On top of this, young immigrants develop a sense of maturity and responsibility earlier than non-immigrants due to their severely sped up growth.

Unfortunately, there is no real solution for this problem. People will continue to immigrate for any reason that they have, whether that is for safety, job, better education, etc. As well, one cannot change human nature and their feelings. However, something can be done to help these kids live out their normal childhood. Welcome them, treat them as you would anyone else, help them because in the end we are all the same. Human.

The Stigma Against Mental Health

The Stigma Against Mental Health

Mental health stigma, characterized by negative attitudes, stereotypes, and discrimination towards individuals with mental health conditions, continues to hinder open conversations, prevent timely interventions, and perpetuate a cycle of suffering.

Historically, mental health conditions were often misunderstood and attributed to supernatural forces or moral failings. This historical backdrop has contributed to the enduring misconception that individuals with mental health issues are somehow weak, unpredictable, or dangerous. These unfounded beliefs have seeped into cultural narratives, perpetuating harmful stereotypes that fuel the stigma against mental health.

The media plays a significant role in shaping societal perceptions, and unfortunately, it has not always been an ally in the fight against mental health stigma. Sensationalized portrayals of mental illness in movies, television shows, and news reports often exaggerate symptoms, emphasize violent behaviors, or depict individuals as "crazy" or "unstable." These portrayals not only misrepresent the reality of mental health but also reinforce negative stereotypes, contributing to the stigma.

The consequences of mental health stigma are far-reaching, with many individuals choosing to suffer in silence rather than confront the judgment and discrimination they fear. The silence can lead to delayed or inadequate treatment, intensifying the impact of mental health conditions. The fear of being labeled as weak or flawed prevents countless individuals from seeking the support they desperately need.

The stigma against mental health has a profound impact on the overall well being of individuals and communities. It impedes the development of a supportive environment where people feel comfortable discussing their struggles and seeking help. This lack of open dialogue prevents the implementation of effective preventive measures and early interventions, allowing mental health issues to escalate.

Breaking the stigma against mental health requires a collective effort to reshape societal attitudes and dismantle the misconceptions that surround mental illness. Education and awareness campaigns play a crucial role in dispelling myths, fostering empathy, and promoting a more accurate understanding of mental health conditions. By sharing personal stories, highlighting successful individuals who have overcome mental health challenges, and emphasizing the prevalence of mental health issues, society can begin to shift its perspective.

Encouraging open conversations about mental health is a fundamental step towards breaking the stigma. By creating safe spaces where individuals can share their experiences without fear of judgment, we can chip away at the walls that have kept mental health issues in the shadows.

Addressing the stigma against mental health is not a task for a select few; it is a collective responsibility that requires the active participation of individuals, communities, media, and policymakers. By understanding the origins of mental health stigma, acknowledging its pervasive impact, and taking concrete steps towards fostering a culture of acceptance and support, we can break the chains that have held back progress for far too long.

My Journey Towards Social Service Leadership

My Journey Towards Social Service Leadership

Embarking on the path of becoming a social service worker is not merely a career choice for me; it is a deeply personal commitment rooted in my own experiences as a struggling youth. Having faced numerous challenges without a support system, I understand firsthand the impact that a lack of guidance and belief can have on a young person's life. This blog explores my motivation to help today's youth navigate the complexities of life, drawing inspiration from my own past and a burning desire to be the supportive figure I never had.
As a young individual navigating the tuff waters of adolescence, the absence of a reliable support system during this critical period left me feeling adrift and abandoned. I encountered numerous roadblocks, and the lack of someone who believed in me exacerbated the challenges I faced. This turbulent phase of my life ignited a passion within me, a commitment to ensuring that no other youth would have to endure the isolation and despair I experienced.

My personal struggles have endowed me with a unique understanding of the challenges that young people face today. This empathy, born from my own journey, fuels my desire to become a social service worker. I comprehend the importance of having a supportive figure who believes in the potential of every individual, regardless of their circumstances.

One of the core principles driving my desire to help youth is the belief that every young person possesses untapped potential. I understand the transformative impact of having someone who believes in you during times of adversity. As a social service worker, I aspire to be that unwavering source of belief for the youth I encounter. By instilling a sense of self-worth and resilience, I aim to empower young individuals to overcome their challenges and chart their own paths towards a brighter future.

My commitment to helping youth is not just about providing immediate assistance; it is about creating a ripple effect of positive change. I believe that by offering support and guidance to struggling youth, I can contribute to breaking the cycle of despair and empower them to become advocates for change in their own lives and communities.

My journey from a struggling youth to aspiring social service worker is a testament to the transformative power of empathy and support. Motivated by my own experiences, I am driven to be the person I never had during my challenging youth. By becoming a social service worker, I aim to bridge the gap between the struggles of today's youth and the understanding they need to overcome them. My journey is a story of resilience, belief, and the unwavering commitment to fostering positive change in the lives of the next generation.

Your Past Is Not Your Future

Your Past Is Not Your Future

Life is a journey filled with twists, turns, and unexpected detours, and often, our past experiences shape who we are today. However, it's essential to recognize that the past doesn't dictate our future.

For some, life's canvas may be painted with strokes of hardship, adversity, and regret. I am one such individual who has navigated the waters of a troubled past, facing storms that threatened to obscure the possibility of a better tomorrow. Yet I have chosen to sculpt a future that defies the constraints of my history. The journey outlined in these pages is not one of escapism, but rather a testament to the human capacity for transformation.

Acknowledging the past is the first step toward liberation. Instead of being imprisoned by regrets, one can choose to view past mistakes as valuable lessons. The ability to recognize shortcomings and take responsibility for them is the foundation upon which a brighter future is built. The past may be unchangeable, but the present and future are open canvases waiting to be painted with new possibilities.

Resilience is the cornerstone of overcoming a difficult past. Life's challenges may have left scars, but those scars become badges of resilience and strength. Each setback becomes an opportunity for growth, and setbacks are no longer roadblocks but stepping stones towards a brighter future.

No one walks the path of redemption alone. Building a support system is crucial for those seeking to create a positive future. Friends, family, mentors, and support groups provide encouragement, guidance, and a sense of belonging. The power of a supportive community cannot be overstated, as it serves as a reminder that the journey towards a better future is a collective effort.

Your past does not determine your future; it merely shapes the path you choose to take. The journey from a difficult past to a promising future is marked by resilience, self-reflection, and a commitment to change. Those who have faced adversity head-on, learned from their experiences, and embraced personal growth showcase the profound truth that redemption is always within reach. So, let your past be a stepping stone, not a stumbling block, as you forge ahead into a future filled with hope, growth, and possibility.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in Canada: My Newcomer Perspective

Perspective

As a newcomer to Canada from Latin America, my journey has been a tapestry of experiences, challenges, and triumphs. Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15th to October 15th, holds a special place in my heart. Hispanic Heritage Month provides a wonderful opportunity for me to reconnect with my roots, celebrate the traditions I grew up with, and cherish the values that have shaped me. It's a reminder that my cultural identity is something to be cherished, preserved, and shared..

  • Finding a Supportive Community

Navigating life as a newcomer can be both exciting and challenging. During Hispanic Heritage Month, I've found solace in the vibrant Latin American community here in Canada. We come together to celebrate our shared experiences, support one another, and build a network that feels like a second family. These connections have made my journey smoother and enriched my Canadian experience.

  • Sharing Our Stories

  • Bridging the Generational Gap

Hispanic Heritage Month serves as a bridge between generations. It allows me to share my traditions and wisdom with my little daughter, ensuring that our cultural heritage is preserved and cherished. This intergenerational connection is invaluable. When she came to Canada she was only 3 years old. We only speak Spanish at home, and she loves her folklore dress.

¡No te arrepentirás!

¡No te arrepentirás!
